Ca' de Ven — Enoteca e Piadina
Housed in a Renaissance palazzo on Via Corrado Ricci, Ca' de Ven is Ravenna's most atmospheric place to eat piadina — the Romagnola flatbread — washed down with local Sangiovese poured from a cellar that has been operating since 1947.
What to Order and Why It Matters
The piadina here is cooked on a traditional testo (a flat terracotta griddle) and served in the classic thick, slightly charred Ravennate style. Order the version stuffed with squacquerone, rucola and Parma prosciutto — the combination of warm bread, cool creamy cheese and peppery leaves is deeply satisfying.
The wine list leans heavily on Emilia-Romagna producers: Sangiovese di Romagna, Albana (Italy's first white wine to earn DOCG status) and Trebbiano. The house Sangiovese by the carafe is honest and cheap — around €4 for half a litre.
The Setting: Why This Place Feels Special
The dining rooms occupy the ground floor of Palazzo Rasponi delle Teste, a 15th-century building with exposed brick vaults, wooden barrels lining the walls and long communal tables that encourage conversation with strangers. It feels more like a literary salon than a restaurant.
Dante Alighieri spent his final years in Ravenna and died here in 1321 — the city takes its literary heritage seriously, and Ca' de Ven leans into it with framed quotations and an atmosphere that feels genuinely old rather than manufactured.
Arrive by noon for lunch or by 7 pm for dinner to secure a table without a long wait. The kitchen closes in the mid-afternoon, so this is not a place for a late lunch after 2:30 pm.
