Restaurante El Barquero
Sitting directly on the Puerto Calero waterfront with an unobstructed view across the pontoons, El Barquero has built a loyal following among both residents and repeat visitors for its no-nonsense approach to Canarian seafood — the fish is local, the portions are generous and the rice dishes are exceptional. It is the kind of place where a two-hour lunch happens entirely by accident.
What to order
Start with the papas arrugadas — the wrinkled salt-boiled potatoes that are Lanzarote's edible signature — served here with both mojo rojo and mojo verde made in-house from local peppers and fresh coriander. Follow with the arroz caldoso de mariscos, a soupy, saffron-scented shellfish rice that takes twenty minutes to prepare and is worth every second of the wait.
The grilled vieja (parrotfish) is caught locally and served whole with a wedge of lemon and a side of fried plantain; it is the dish most tables around you will be eating, and for good reason. Finish with the bienmesabe, a dense almond and honey cream that is pure Canarian comfort.
Timing and atmosphere
Lunch is the main event here — locals eat between 14:00 and 16:00 and the terrace fills quickly on weekends. Arrive at 13:30 to claim a front-row table with harbour views before the rush. The dinner service is quieter and the golden light bouncing off the water at sunset makes for an unexpectedly romantic setting.
The staff are unhurried and genuinely knowledgeable about the menu; if you ask what came off the boats that morning, they will tell you, and they will steer you toward it.
