The view and the village
Femés is one of the oldest settlements on Lanzarote, a cluster of whitewashed houses and a 17th-century church gathered around a square where cats sleep on warm stone walls and old men play dominoes in the shade. The viewpoint itself is an informal terrace just beyond the church square — no railing, no information board, just a sheer drop and a staggering panorama.
The light is best in the late afternoon when the low sun picks out the geometry of the salt flats at Salinas de Janubio in silver and pink, and the marina's white hulls glow far below. Bring a wide-angle lens if you shoot with a camera.
Combining it with a hike
A well-marked trail descends from Femés toward Playa de Papagayo, passing through the heart of Los Ajaches — the full descent takes around two hours and requires a taxi or pre-arranged lift back up, but it is one of the finest walks on the island for scenery and solitude.
Alternatively, the short circular walk around the Atalaya de Femés ridge takes 45 minutes and rewards you with 360-degree views that include the northern volcanoes of Timanfaya on the horizon.
