Museo Submarino de Lanzarote (Underwater Museum)

A short boat ride from Puerto Calero Marina lies one of the world's most unusual art installations: a collection of over 300 life-size human figures sculpted by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor and submerged on the seabed off the coast of Lanzarote. The sculptures are encrusted with coral and colonised by marine life, blurring the line between contemporary art and living reef — and Puerto Cale

The sculptures underwater

The installation sits at a depth of between 9 and 15 metres, making it accessible to both qualified scuba divers and snorkellers on calm days. The figures are arranged in circular and linear formations, some seated at desks, others standing in a ring, all gradually being reclaimed by the sea — barnacled, draped in algae, peered at by wrasse and damselfish.

Taylor designed the sculptures from pH-neutral marine-grade concrete specifically to encourage colonisation; visiting even two years apart reveals a dramatically different scene as the reef evolves. It is haunting, beautiful and completely unlike any dive site you have experienced before.

How to visit from Puerto Calero

Several dive centres operating out of Puerto Calero Marina run dedicated trips to the Museo Submarino, including introductory dives for non-certified divers and guided snorkel tours on the shallower sections. The boat ride takes around 20 minutes and the site is usually dived in the morning when visibility is at its best — often exceeding 20 metres.

Book through Manta Diving Lanzarote or Calero Dive Centre, both of which have desks on the marina promenade and offer full equipment hire. The experience is suitable for children aged eight and over on the snorkel option.
