Kayaking to the Emerald Grotto Sea Caves
While the Grotta dello Smeraldo near Conca dei Marini gets all the tour-bus traffic, Praiano's own coastline hides a series of unnamed sea caves and arches accessible only by kayak or stand-up paddleboard — and the bioluminescent glow of sunlight refracted through submerged rock is every bit as spectacular. Several local outfitters launch from Marina di Praia and guide small groups along the cliff
The Experience
Guided kayak tours typically last 2–3 hours and hug the cliff face west of Marina di Praia, threading through arches, entering low caves where the water shifts from turquoise to an electric aquamarine, and pausing at a hidden pebble beach accessible only from the sea.
The guides — most of them local fishermen's sons who have paddled these waters since childhood — point out features invisible from the road above: nesting peregrine ledges, Saracen-era mooring rings carved into the rock, and the exact spot where the cliff face changes from limestone to dark tuff.
Practicalities
Kayak Praiano and Amalfi Sea Adventures both operate from Marina di Praia between April and October, offering morning tours (the calmest sea conditions) from around €35–45 per person including equipment and a guide.
No prior kayaking experience is required for the standard coastal tour; the water inside the coves is sheltered and shallow enough to stand in most spots, making it suitable for families with children over eight.
