Restaurant Le Jardin d'Aymeric, Prades

Tucked behind the Place de la République, Le Jardin d'Aymeric is the kind of quietly excellent restaurant that locals are slightly reluctant to share — a shaded garden terrace, a short menu that changes with the market, and cooking that takes Catalan and Roussillon traditions seriously without being precious about them. It is the best reason to linger in Prades well past lunchtime.

What to Order

The menu leans hard on local producers: Conflent valley vegetables, Pyrenean lamb, trout from mountain streams, and charcuterie from nearby farms. A typical lunch might open with escalivada (slow-roasted aubergine and peppers with anchovies) and move to a generous daube of Pyrenean lamb slow-cooked with olives and orange zest — a dish that tastes like the landscape it came from.

Dessert almost always features local fruit: a tarte fine of Roussillon peaches in summer, or a crème catalane — the region's answer to crème brûlée, scented with cinnamon and lemon — that arrives with a properly crackling caramel crust. The wine list focuses on Roussillon appellations: Maury, Collioure and Côtes du Roussillon Villages are all well represented at fair prices.

The Setting and Vibe

The garden is strung with fairy lights and shaded by a large plane tree, making it one of the most pleasant places to eat in the entire Conflent valley on a warm evening. Service is unhurried in the best French sense — nobody rushes you, and the cheese board arrives exactly when you want it.

Lunch is the main event: a two-course formule is typically available on weekdays at around €18–€22, representing exceptional value for the quality. Evening bookings fill up quickly in July and August, so reserve a table at least 48 hours ahead.
