What to Buy and Taste
The Conflent valley is renowned throughout France for its stone fruit, and the peaches and nectarines sold here — often picked that same morning from orchards just down the road — are a world away from supermarket versions. Look also for the small, intensely sweet pears called 'poires de Conflent' and jars of locally produced chestnut cream from the Canigou foothills.
Charcuterie stalls carry cured meats in the Catalan tradition: longanisse sausage, botifarra, and thick slabs of jambon de montagne. A vendor near the church usually sells artisan cheeses from small Pyrenean farms, including creamy brebis (sheep's milk) rounds that pair perfectly with a glass of Maury or Rivesaltes from a neighbouring wine stall.
The Market Atmosphere
By 9 a.m. the square is buzzing with a genuine mix of local farmers, retirees doing their weekly shop, and curious visitors. Unlike some tourist-facing Provençal markets, this one still functions primarily as a community gathering — conversations in Catalan and French overlap, and the café terraces fill with people nursing espressos between purchases.
The market winds down around noon, so arrive before 10 a.m. to get the best produce and to find a spot at one of the outdoor tables before the lunch crowd arrives. A crêpe or a slice of coca (Catalan flatbread topped with roasted vegetables) from a stall makes the ideal mid-market snack.
