Gorges de Carança

About 20 km west of Prades near the village of Thuès-Entre-Valls, the Gorges de Carança cut a narrow, vertiginous slot through the granite massif — and the trail through them is one of the most thrilling half-day walks in the Pyrenees. Iron ladders, suspension bridges and walkways bolted directly into the cliff face carry you above a river of impossible turquoise-green, fed by snowmelt from the hi

The Trail Experience

The gorge path begins at the car park in Thuès-Entre-Valls (reachable by the Train Jaune from Villefranche-de-Conflent — a spectacular journey in itself) and follows the Carança river upstream through progressively narrower and more dramatic scenery. The first suspension bridge appears within 20 minutes, and the exposure increases steadily as the walls close in around you.

The full circuit to the upper valley and back takes 4–5 hours and gains around 600 m of elevation. A shorter version — just the gorge section to the first natural pools and back — takes about 2 hours and is manageable for fit walkers with a head for heights. The water in the pools is glacier-cold even in August, but irresistible on a hot day.

Practical Tips and Wildlife

The path involves some genuinely exposed sections with fixed chains and iron rungs — it is not suitable for young children or anyone uncomfortable with heights. Hiking boots with ankle support are essential; trail runners are acceptable but sandals are not. The gorge is busiest on summer weekends; a Tuesday or Wednesday morning visit in July gives you near-solitude.

Wallcreepers — small, crimson-winged birds — flit along the cliff faces, and dippers bob on rocks in the river. Higher up, where the gorge opens into alpine meadows, you may spot marmots and, if you're very lucky, the silhouette of a golden eagle against the ridge.
