Mercado Municipal de Pozuelo

The covered Mercado Municipal on Calle Margarita de Parma is the kind of honest, no-frills market that supermarkets have failed to kill — fishmongers still shout the morning catch, and the cheese stall owner will press a sliver of Manchego into your hand before you've even asked. Arrive before 10 am to see it at its liveliest.

Stalls Worth Seeking Out

The fish counter run by Mariscos Pozuelo is a local institution, sourcing daily from Mercamadrid with a particular emphasis on Galician razor clams, percebes and fresh hake. Next door, a family-run charcutería has been slicing jamón ibérico de bellota to order for over two decades — buy 100 g and eat it on a bench outside.

The fruit and vegetable section skews seasonal and Spanish-grown: in spring look for white asparagus from Navarra and small, intensely sweet Piel de Sapo melons from Castilla-La Mancha. The florist in the far corner is a secret weapon for anyone self-catering in a rented apartment.

Eating In and Around the Market

A compact bar tucked into the market's rear serves a €4 breakfast of tostada con tomate and café con leche that is frankly better than anything in a hotel buffet. By noon the same bar pivots to a short tapas menu — the croquetas de jamón are crisp, molten and worth the wait.

The street outside hosts a small organic produce pop-up on Saturday mornings (09:00–14:00), where local growers from the Guadarrama foothills sell honey, cold-pressed olive oil and seasonal vegetables.
