Casa Árabe Garden Courtyard
Few visitors to the Madrid area know that the Casa Árabe institute — dedicated to Arab and Muslim world studies — maintains a serene Andalusian-style courtyard garden in its Pozuelo-adjacent premises that is occasionally open for cultural events and guided visits. Zellige tilework, a central fountain and orange trees create an atmosphere closer to Marrakech than Madrid.
Architecture and Atmosphere
The courtyard follows the classic Hispano-Moorish riad layout: a central marble fountain ringed by geometric zellige tiles in cobalt and white, shaded arcades on two sides, and low-pruned orange trees whose blossom scents the air in April and May. It is a working cultural institute, not a tourist attraction, which gives visits an authentic, unhurried quality.
The building's interior spaces, visible during events, feature carved plasterwork (yesería) and cedar-wood ceilings commissioned from Moroccan artisans — a level of craft detail rarely encountered outside Andalusia or North Africa. Photography is generally permitted in the courtyard during open events.
When and How to Visit
Casa Árabe hosts regular public lectures, film screenings, Arabic-language classes and cultural festivals — many of them free or low-cost — that provide legitimate access to the courtyard and building. Check the events calendar on their official website (casaarabe.es) a few weeks in advance and book the free tickets promptly, as capacity is limited.
The annual Al-Andalus cultural festival, typically held in May, is the single best opportunity to see the courtyard at its most animated, with live music, food stalls serving Moroccan mint tea and pastries, and craft demonstrations from visiting artisans.
