Lac de Grand Lieu — Day Trip from Pornic
Just 30 km north of Pornic, the Lac de Grand Lieu is the largest natural lake in France outside of flood season — a vast, reed-fringed wilderness that feels impossibly remote given its proximity to Nantes. Classified as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, it shelters one of the largest breeding colonies of grey herons in Europe and a staggering diversity of migratory birds.
Wildlife and Landscape
The lake's surface area fluctuates between 3,700 and 6,300 hectares depending on winter rainfall, and much of its shoreline is inaccessible marsh — which is precisely why its wildlife is so extraordinary. From the observation tower at the Maison du Lac in Passay village, you can scan vast reed beds where purple herons, bitterns, marsh harriers and great white egrets hunt in plain sight.
In spring and early summer, the lake's southern shore near Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu is carpeted with white water-lily flowers — a landscape that has barely changed since the 19th-century painters who immortalised it. Rent a flat-bottomed boat (une barque) from Passay to reach areas inaccessible on foot.
Getting There and Visiting
From Pornic, drive north on the D13 toward Saint-Père-en-Retz and then follow signs to Passay — the journey takes around 40 minutes. The Maison du Lac visitor centre in Passay village is the best starting point: it has an exhibition on the lake's ecology, a guided walk schedule and boat rental.
The lake is at its most spectacular in early morning when mist hangs over the reed beds and the bird activity peaks. Pack binoculars, insect repellent and rubber-soled shoes — the paths near the shore can be muddy even in summer.
