La Terrasse de la Plage — Plage de la Birochère
Sitting on a sun-bleached terrace directly above the golden crescent of La Birochère beach, this relaxed restaurant is the kind of place where lunch turns into a three-hour event without anyone minding. The menu is unapologetically local: whole grilled sea bream caught that morning, moules marinières with Muscadet, and a tarte aux pommes made with apples from the Vendée hinterland.
What to Order
The plateau de fruits de mer — a tiered tower of oysters, whelks, shrimp and half a crayfish — is the showpiece dish and feeds two generously. Order it with a carafe of Muscadet sur lie from the Sèvre-et-Maine appellation, whose mineral citrus notes cut perfectly through the brine of the shellfish.
For a lighter lunch, the sardines grillées served on a wooden board with sourdough and salted Breton butter is the dish that best captures the spirit of the Jade Coast: simple, fresh and absolutely correct.
Atmosphere and Booking
The terrace tables facing the sea are the ones to request — shaded by a canvas awning, they catch the afternoon breeze off the Atlantic and look directly down onto the beach where children are building sandcastles. The interior is cheerful but misses the point entirely.
Reservations are essential for lunch from late June through August. Walk-ins are occasionally possible at 12 noon sharp when the doors open, or after 2 pm when the first sitting clears. The restaurant is closed Monday evenings and all day Tuesday outside of peak season.
