Restaurante La Violeta
A Ponferrada institution on Calle de la Calzada, La Violeta has been feeding locals and Camino pilgrims for decades with honest, ingredient-led Bierzo cooking. The menú del día is one of the best-value lunches in the province, and the roasted pork with Bierzo peppers is the dish that regulars never skip.
What to Order
Start with the ensalada de pimientos asados — thin strips of fire-roasted Bierzo pepper dressed with olive oil and garlic, served at room temperature. It's deceptively simple and utterly addictive. Follow it with the cecina de buey (air-dried beef), a regional speciality that arrives translucent-thin and deeply savoury.
For mains, the botillo con grelos (the PDO pork roll slow-cooked with turnip greens) is the definitive Bierzo plate, available from October through March. In summer the kitchen pivots to lighter dishes: grilled trout from the Oza river and lamb chops from the Ancares mountains.
Wine and the Bierzo DO
La Violeta keeps a well-chosen list of Bierzo DO wines, focused on the indigenous Mencía grape — a medium-bodied red with violet aromatics and a mineral finish that pairs brilliantly with the region's smoky, pepper-forward food. Ask the staff for a glass from Descendientes de J. Palacios or Bodegas Estefanía for a benchmark example.
The dining room is unpretentious — tiled floors, wooden tables, framed photos of the Camino — but the cooking is taken seriously. Reservations are recommended for Friday and Saturday lunch.
