Museo del Bierzo (Casa de los Escudos)
Housed in a restored 16th-century palace with a striking heraldic façade on Calle del Reloj, the Museo del Bierzo is consistently overlooked by visitors rushing to the castle — which is precisely why it rewards those who stop. Its compact rooms trace the archaeology, ethnography and art of the Bierzo region from the Iron Age castro culture to the 20th century.
Highlights Inside the Collection
The ground floor Roman room is exceptional, displaying gold jewellery, ceramic oil lamps and bronze military fittings recovered from the vast Las Médulas mining landscape nearby. A large-scale model of the Roman hydraulic mining system helps visualise the engineering feat that reshaped an entire mountain range.
Upstairs, the ethnographic galleries reconstruct a traditional Bierzo kitchen, a blacksmith's workshop and a hórreo (raised granary), using original tools and furniture collected from villages across the comarca. It's the kind of slow, tactile museum that genuinely connects you to the people who shaped this landscape.
The Building Itself
The Casa de los Escudos takes its name from the carved stone coats of arms that decorate its Renaissance façade — one of the finest examples of civil heraldic architecture in Castile and León. Spend a few minutes outside studying the stonework before entering.
The small courtyard at the centre of the building, with its double-arched gallery, is a tranquil spot that most visitors walk straight past. It's ideal for a quiet photograph away from the crowds.
