Mirador del Castillo (Parque del Temple)
The terrace viewpoint at the edge of Parque del Temple delivers the single most photogenic panorama in Ponferrada: the Templar Castle in the foreground, the slate rooftops of the Casco Antiguo tumbling down the hillside and the green Sil valley stretching west toward Galicia. It costs nothing and takes five minutes to reach.
The View and When to Go
The mirador faces roughly southwest, making it ideal for late-afternoon light when the castle's sandstone glows warm gold and long shadows define every battlement. On clear winter days, the snow-dusted peaks of the Sierra del Teleno appear on the southern horizon, adding an extra layer of drama.
Sunrise visits are quieter and reward early risers with a mist-shrouded Sil valley and almost zero foot traffic. Bring a thermos of coffee and claim a bench before the dog-walkers arrive.
Getting There and Around
The viewpoint is accessed via Calle del Reloj from the old town, or through the Parque del Temple gardens that wrap around the castle's eastern flank. The park itself is beautifully maintained with rose beds, a small fountain and shaded benches — worth a slow stroll in its own right.
From the mirador it's a two-minute walk to the castle entrance and five minutes to the Basílica de la Encina, so it fits naturally into a morning loop of the Casco Antiguo.
