Mercado Medieval de Peñafiel
Every August, Peñafiel transforms its historic Plaza del Coso into one of Castile's most evocative medieval markets, with craftspeople, falconers, jousting displays and stalls selling everything from hand-forged ironwork to local cheeses beneath the gaze of the hilltop castle. It's theatrical, genuinely fun and packed with things worth buying.
What the market offers
The market fills the Plaza del Coso — itself a remarkably well-preserved medieval square with wooden-balconied houses on all four sides — and spills into the surrounding streets. Stalls sell handmade leather goods, ceramic pottery in Castilian styles, beeswax candles, artisan cheeses from the Castilla y León region and local honey. Prices are fair and the quality is noticeably higher than tourist-trap markets in larger cities.
Look specifically for the stalls selling Ribera del Duero wines directly from small producers who don't have their own shops — this is a rare chance to taste and buy wines from micro-bodegas with production of just a few thousand bottles per year.
The spectacle beyond the shopping
Beyond commerce, the market stages a full programme of medieval entertainment: falconry displays, medieval combat re-enactments, troubadour music and candlelit evening processions through the old town. The atmosphere after dark, with the castle floodlit on the ridge above, is genuinely magical and worth staying for.
The market typically runs for three days in mid-August (exact dates vary annually — check the Ayuntamiento de Peñafiel website). Accommodation in the village books out months in advance for this weekend; consider staying in Valladolid (50 km west) and driving in.
