Asador Mauro
If you eat one meal in Peñafiel, eat it here. Asador Mauro is a family-run restaurant in the village centre that has been roasting lechazo — milk-fed Castilian lamb — in a wood-fired clay oven for decades, and the result is the kind of dish that makes you rearrange your travel plans to come back.
What to order and why
Lechazo asado is the only thing most regulars ever order: a quarter of a milk-fed lamb, skin lacquered to a deep mahogany, meat so tender it falls from the bone with the touch of a spoon. It arrives in the same terracotta dish it was roasted in, with nothing more than its own juices and a wedge of lemon. Resist the urge to add anything — it needs nothing.
Start with a plate of morcilla de Burgos (blood sausage with rice, fried crisp at the edges) or local sheep's cheese with quince paste. The bread, baked in-house, is worth ordering extra of just to mop the roasting juices.
Pairing with local wine
The wine list is a short, honest tour of Ribera del Duero, with bottles from nearby producers including Protos and Pago de Carraovejas alongside smaller names you won't see outside the region. Ask the waiter for a Crianza or Reserva Tempranillo — the tannins and dark fruit are the natural partner for roast lamb fat.
Lunch is the main event in Castilian culture: the kitchen fires up the wood oven from around 13:00 and the dining room fills fast on weekends. Book ahead for Saturday lunch, especially between October and February when lechazo season is at its peak.
