Iglesia de San Pablo and the Judería Quarter
Most visitors go straight up to the castle and miss the quiet streets below, where the 14th-century Iglesia de San Pablo hides one of the finest Gothic-Mudéjar apses in Castile and the surrounding judería preserves a street layout unchanged since the medieval Jewish community lived here. It's a 30-minute walk that rewards the curious enormously.
The church that stops you in your tracks
The Iglesia de San Pablo was founded in 1324 by the Infante Juan Manuel — the same nobleman who wrote El Conde Lucanor, one of the masterpieces of medieval Spanish literature — and its apse is a textbook example of Gothic-Mudéjar fusion: pointed Gothic arches executed in decorative brickwork with geometric Moorish patterns. The exterior is more rewarding than the interior, so walk slowly around the full perimeter.
The church sits at the edge of what was Peñafiel's judería, the Jewish quarter, which was home to a significant community until the 1492 expulsion. The narrow lanes between Calle de la Sinagoga and the river preserve their medieval widths and irregular plot boundaries — walk them without a map and let the layout reveal itself.
Connecting the dots on foot
From San Pablo, a 10-minute walk north along the river brings you to the Convento de Santa Clara, a 15th-century convent still occupied by Clarissan nuns who sell homemade sweets through a traditional torno (revolving wooden hatch) in the convent wall — ring the bell and wait. The almond pastries and yemas (egg-yolk sweets) are exceptional and the transaction itself is a glimpse of a centuries-old tradition.
The full circuit — castle, San Pablo, judería lanes, Convento de Santa Clara — takes about half a day and costs almost nothing. It's the version of Peñafiel that most day-trippers from Valladolid never see.
