Pintxos Crawl on Calle Estafeta & Calle San Nicolás
Pamplona sits at the cultural crossroads of Basque and Navarran gastronomy, and nowhere is that more delicious than on the two streets that define its pintxos scene. Calle Estafeta and the parallel Calle San Nicolás are lined with bars whose counters buckle under towers of bread-topped bites every evening from 7 pm.
How a Pintxos Crawl Works
The ritual is simple: walk in, order a glass of Navarra rosado or a cold Alhambra beer, grab one or two pintxos from the counter (usually €1.50–€2.50 each), eat standing up, pay, and move to the next bar. Three bars, three rounds – that is a proper txikiteo.
The best pintxos are made to order, not the ones sitting under the glass dome. Ask the barman for 'los calientes' – the hot ones. Classics include gilda (anchovy, olive and guindilla pepper on a skewer), bacalao al pil-pil on toast, and morcilla with caramelised onion.
Standout Bars
Bar Gaucho on Calle Espoz y Mina is famous for its foie gras and truffle pintxo – a single bite that costs €4 and is worth every cent. Bar Txoko on Calle San Nicolás is a local institution for its tortilla de patata, voted among the best in Spain by food critics.
Bar La Mejillonera near Plaza del Castillo specialises in mejillones (mussels) cooked a dozen ways – a rare shellfish specialist in a landlocked city. Order the tigres (mussels in spicy béchamel, breadcrumbed and fried) and a cold Mahou.
Timing and Etiquette
The golden hour is 7–9 pm on weekdays, when bars are busy but not crushed. Weekends get rowdy after 9 pm – fun but harder to get served. Lunchtime (1–3 pm) offers the same pintxos at quieter bars.
Tipping is not obligatory but leaving small change on the counter is appreciated. Never eat pintxos from the counter without ordering a drink first – it is considered bad form.
