Mirador do Faro de Ourense (Monte Alegre)

Climb to the hilltop above the city and the whole Miño river valley unfolds beneath you in a sweep of green hills, terracotta rooftops and glinting water. This is the viewpoint locals keep to themselves — and it's spectacular at golden hour.

The ascent and the panorama

Monte Alegre rises just south of the old town, and a network of footpaths through eucalyptus and oak woodland leads to the summit in about 40 minutes on foot from the cathedral. Alternatively, drive up the winding road to the car park near the old lighthouse (faro) structure.

From the top, you can trace the Miño river as it bends through the valley, spot the five bridges of Ourense including the medieval Ponte Vella and the soaring modern Ponte do Milenio, and on clear days see the Serra do Invernadeiro mountains to the south-east.

Best times and what to bring

Sunset is the undisputed highlight: the sky turns amber over the valley and the old town's cathedral towers glow gold. Bring a bottle of local wine and a blanket in autumn or winter — temperatures drop sharply once the sun dips.

Spring is equally rewarding when the hillside is carpeted in yellow gorse and the air smells of pine resin. Birdwatchers should look for short-toed eagles and red kites riding the thermals above the valley.
