Cañón do Sil & Ribeira Sacra Vineyards
An hour's drive from Ourense, the Sil river has carved a 500-metre-deep canyon through the slate mountains of the Ribeira Sacra, and on its near-vertical walls, monks planted vines over a thousand years ago. The result is one of the most dramatic wine landscapes on the planet.
The canyon by boat
The most visceral way to experience the Cañón do Sil is from the water. Boat trips depart from the village of Os Peares and from the Doade embarkation point, gliding through the gorge for 90 minutes while sheer slate walls rise on both sides and ancient Romanesque monasteries — Santo Estevo, Santa Cristina — perch impossibly on ledges above.
The silence inside the canyon is profound, broken only by the engine and the occasional splash of a waterfall. Bring a zoom lens: the terraced vineyards cling to the rock at angles that seem to defy gravity, and the light in the gorge changes dramatically through the day.
The Romanesque monasteries
Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil, now converted into a Parador hotel, is the grandest of the canyon's monasteries and worth visiting even if you're not staying. Its three Romanesque cloisters, built between the 10th and 17th centuries, are among the finest in Galicia — and the hotel bar serves local Mencía red wine at very reasonable prices.
The smaller Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil, reached by a forest footpath from a car park on the canyon rim, rewards the 20-minute walk with a perfectly preserved 12th-century church in a clearing of oak and chestnut. Almost nobody is there. It feels like a discovery every time.
Ribeira Sacra wine tasting
The Ribeira Sacra DO produces Mencía reds of extraordinary depth — smoky, mineral and floral all at once — from those near-vertical slate terraces. Several small wineries (adegas) along the canyon rim offer tastings, including Adega Algueira in Doade and Regina Viarum near Chantada, both with canyon views from the tasting room.
Pair the wine with local empanada de zorza (spiced pork pastry) or a plate of local cheeses. This is a half-day or full-day trip from Ourense and easily one of the most memorable experiences in all of northern Spain.
