Mercado Municipal de Ourense (A Praza)
Housed in a handsome early-20th-century iron-and-glass building in the city centre, Ourense's municipal market is where the whole food culture of inland Galicia condenses into one magnificent, fragrant space. Come hungry and come early.
What to look for inside
The ground floor is a theatre of Galician produce: lacón (cured pork shoulder), chorizo de Ourense, wheels of tetilla and San Simón cheeses, and baskets of wild mushrooms — ceps, chanterelles and setas de cardo — foraged from the surrounding hills.
Fish counters display the freshness of the Atlantic despite Ourense being 100 km inland: percebes (goose barnacles), navajas (razor clams) and whole turbot arrive daily from the Rías Baixas. Vendors are chatty and almost always offer a taste before you buy.
Eating and drinking around the market
The streets radiating from the market — especially Rúa do Paseo and Rúa Lepanto — are lined with tascas that open at breakfast and serve market-sourced food all day. Order a chourizo á feira (chorizo cooked in white wine and served on a wooden board) with a small glass of Ribeiro.
Don't leave without trying filloas, Galicia's paper-thin crêpes, sold warm from iron griddles by vendors near the entrance. They come plain, filled with cream, or — during Entroido carnival season — drizzled with honey.
