Seceda Ridge & Geisler Peaks Panorama

Rising to 2,518 m above Ortisei, the Seceda plateau delivers what many photographers call the single greatest Dolomite panorama: a serrated curtain of the Geisler/Odle peaks reflected in morning light with flower-carpeted meadows at your feet. A gondola and chairlift whisk you from the village centre in under 20 minutes, yet the view feels utterly untamed.

Getting to the Top

The Ortisei–Furnes gondola departs from the northern edge of town, followed by the Furnes–Seceda chairlift; the full ride takes roughly 18 minutes. Arrive before 8 a.m. in summer to beat tour groups and catch the warm alpenglow on the Odle towers. In winter the same lifts serve the Val Gardena ski circuit, part of the vast Dolomiti Superski area.

From the top station a signed, mostly flat trail (path No. 2) skirts the ridge westward for about 2 km to the famous prayer-cross viewpoint, where the sheer grey walls of the Geisler group fill the entire southern horizon. Sturdy trainers are fine for this section; no technical climbing required.

Making the Most of the Visit

Pack a picnic: the rifugio at the top station sells South Tyrolean Speck sandwiches and local Vernatsch wine, but the grassy saddle 10 minutes further west offers a quieter, more scenic lunch spot. Paragliders launch here on calm afternoons, adding streaks of colour against the limestone towers.

For photographers, the classic shot frames the wooden cross in the foreground with the Geisler pinnacles behind — shoot with a wide-angle lens in portrait orientation just after sunrise for soft side-lighting on the rock faces.
