MUSÉUM Gherdëina (Museum of Val Gardena)
Tucked behind the parish church, this compact but richly curated museum tells the complete story of the Ladin-speaking people of Val Gardena — from Mesolithic hunters who camped here 10,000 years ago to the 19th-century woodcarvers who sold their wares door-to-door across Europe. It is the best single place to understand why Ortisei feels so distinct from both Italian and Austrian Tyrol.
Highlights of the Collection
The palaeontology room holds genuine Triassic fossils excavated from the surrounding Dolomite rock, including ammonites and the remarkable Ticinosuchus, a crocodile-like reptile that roamed this valley 240 million years ago when it was a tropical lagoon. The displays are bilingual in Ladin and Italian, with English summaries.
The ethnographic wing reconstructs a traditional Ladin farmhouse interior with original 18th-century furniture, hand-painted dowry chests and a working loom. The woodcarving section traces the craft from rough-hewn shepherd's tools to the hyper-detailed polychrome statues that made Val Gardena famous across Catholic Europe in the 1800s.

The museum is small enough to see thoroughly in 90 minutes, making it an ideal wet-weather option or a meaningful first stop to contextualise everything else you see in the valley. The gift shop sells scholarly catalogues on Ladin culture and high-quality reproduction prints of historical woodcarving patterns.
Check the museum's seasonal programme: summer often brings temporary exhibitions by contemporary Ladin artists, and the guided evening tours (offered in July and August) include access to the museum's storage rooms where oversized carved altarpieces are kept.
