Ortisei Christmas Market (Mercatino di Natale)
Ortisei's Christkindlmarkt is no generic tinsel affair — this is the village that has hand-carved wooden nativity figures for centuries, and the market stalls overflow with intricate linden-wood angels, painted nutcrackers and locally made beeswax candles that you simply cannot find anywhere else. Held in the pedestrian heart of the village, it runs from late November through 6 January.
What Makes It Unique
Val Gardena has been a UNESCO-recognised woodcarving district since 2018, and Ortisei is its capital. At the market you can watch master carvers like those from the Comploj or Demetz workshops demonstrate the craft live, chipping away at soft linden wood with small curved gouges. Prices for hand-carved pieces start around €15 for a small ornament and rise into the hundreds for museum-quality nativity figures.
Unlike larger South Tyrolean markets in Bolzano or Merano, Ortisei's event stays genuinely local in scale: roughly 50 stalls clustered around the church of St. Ulrich and along Via Rezia, with mulled Glühwein made from local Lagrein grapes served in reusable ceramic mugs you keep as a souvenir.
Beyond the Stalls
The surrounding streets are lit with thousands of warm-white lights strung between the traditional Ladin-style houses, making an evening stroll as much of an attraction as the shopping itself. The village choir performs Advent concerts inside the 18th-century parish church of St. Ulrich most Friday evenings — check the programme at ortisei.com.
Pair your market visit with a stop at Café Promenade on Via Rezia for a Bombardino (hot egg-cream liqueur with whipped cream), the classic après-ski drink of the Dolomites, which tastes even better when snow is falling outside.
