Parc Naturel Régional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin
Stretching across the base of the Cotentin Peninsula just inland from Utah Beach, this vast wetland reserve is one of western France's most important bird habitats — and almost no foreign visitor ever goes there. In spring, the flooded meadows turn silver with standing water and the air thrums with the calls of black-tailed godwits, lapwings and marsh harriers.
What to See & When to Go
The park covers around 145,000 hectares of bocage, marshland and estuary. The best access point for first-time visitors is the Maison du Parc in Saint-Côme-du-Mont, which has free maps, trail guides and a small exhibition on the wetland ecosystem. Rangers here speak enough English to point you toward the best active bird hides.
Spring (April–May) is peak season for wading birds and the flooded prairies; late summer brings dragonflies and marsh orchids. The park is genuinely beautiful in all seasons, but winter can be bleak and some trails flood completely.
Cycling the Marais
The flatness that makes the Cotentin marshes so ecologically rich also makes them ideal cycling country. A network of signed véloroutes connects the villages, and the 30-km loop from Carentan through Saint-Hilaire-Petitville along the canal towpath is flat, car-free and passes three excellent bird-watching platforms.
Carentan itself is worth an hour: a small market town with a Gothic church, a Wednesday morning market and a surprisingly good crêperie on the main square. Bikes can be rented from the tourist office in Carentan for around €15/day.
The park also overlaps with the D-Day landing zones, and several trails pass through or near Utah Beach — a moving juxtaposition of natural tranquillity and historic weight that you won't find in any guidebook itinerary.
