Château de Vendeuvre & its Miniature Furniture Museum
Most visitors to Calvados head straight for Bayeux or the D-Day beaches and never discover this perfectly preserved 18th-century château near Falaise — which means you'll likely have its extraordinary surprise museum almost entirely to yourself. Hidden in the outbuildings is the world's largest collection of miniature furniture, made to the same exacting standards as full-size pieces.
The Miniature Furniture Collection
The collection — over 800 pieces spanning the 17th to 19th centuries — includes working miniature clocks, tiny marquetry commodes and a thumb-sized four-poster bed with silk hangings. These weren't toys; they were master craftsmen's demonstration samples and aristocratic curiosities.
Each piece is displayed in a purpose-built cabinet with magnifying glasses provided, and the curators have written genuinely fascinating notes about provenance. It's the kind of museum that makes an hour disappear in what feels like ten minutes.
The Gardens & the Surprise Fountains
Outside, the formal French gardens are punctuated by 18th-century water features — including a set of hidden jets in the gravel paths that can be triggered to drench unsuspecting visitors. The château's owners still operate the surprise fountains on weekend afternoons, and the shrieks of delight from families are infectious.
The kitchen gardens supply a small on-site tearoom with seasonal produce; the apple tart here, served with a pot of thick crème fraîche, is one of the best things you'll eat in rural Normandy.
