Casa Herminia, Navia
Tucked on a side street in Navia's old quarter, Casa Herminia has been feeding fishermen, farmers and in-the-know visitors for decades with the kind of unfussy, produce-driven Asturian cooking that no hotel restaurant can replicate. The fabada asturiana here — a slow-cooked white bean stew with chorizo, morcilla and lacón — is reason enough to plan a lunch stop in Navia.
What to Order
Beyond the legendary fabada, the daily fish specials depend entirely on what the Navia fishing fleet landed that morning — merluza a la sidra (hake in cider sauce) and chipirones en su tinta (squid in ink) appear regularly and are both outstanding.
Dessert means arroz con leche, the Asturian rice pudding finished with a caramelised sugar crust torched tableside — a small, perfect thing.
Atmosphere and Practicalities
The dining room is unpretentious: tiled walls, paper tablecloths, a blackboard menu. Locals fill it by 2 pm sharp for the menú del día, which typically runs €12–15 and includes wine or sidra.
Reservations are advisable on summer weekends; the owner speaks basic English but a translation app smooths any menu questions.
