Cresta del Gallo, Sierra de la Pila
Rising to 1,227 metres above the plains south-east of Murcia city, the Cresta del Gallo — the Cockerel's Crest — is a dramatic quartzite ridge that rewards a moderate two-hour hike with arguably the finest 360-degree panorama in the entire region. On a clear winter morning you can see from the Mar Menor all the way to the Sierra Nevada.
The Hike Up
The most popular trail begins at the Casa Forestal car park off the MU-503 road, climbing through fragrant pine and rosemary scrub before the path steepens onto exposed rock. The final scramble to the summit trig point is hands-on but perfectly manageable for anyone with a head for heights and decent footwear. Total round-trip distance is around 9 kilometres.
The quartzite outcrops glow amber and rose in late-afternoon light, making this an exceptional spot for photography. Peregrine falcons and Bonelli's eagles nest in the cliffs below the crest, and patient hikers often spot them riding thermals at eye level.
What You See from the Top
The view north takes in the sprawling Huerta de Murcia — a green and gold patchwork of citrus groves and market gardens threaded by the silver ribbon of the Río Segura. To the south-east the shallow turquoise lagoon of the Mar Menor glitters like a spilled mirror, separated from the open Mediterranean by the thin strip of La Manga. On exceptionally clear days the outline of Ibiza is visible on the horizon.
Bring a picnic and time your descent for late afternoon so the ridge catches the golden hour. The drive back through the sierra passes the Embalse de La Cierva reservoir, a lovely spot to stop and watch the light fade.
