Quartier Rebberg
Climbing the gentle hill south-east of the city centre, the Rebberg quarter is a living open-air museum of 19th-century industrial wealth — wide, tree-lined avenues lined with extravagant villas built by Alsatian textile barons who wanted fresh air above the factory smoke. It is the most architecturally surprising neighbourhood in Mulhouse.
A Walk Among the Villas
Stroll along Avenue de la Marseillaise and Rue de Bâle to spot an extraordinary range of styles: neo-Gothic turrets sit beside Italianate loggias, Art Nouveau ironwork and Swiss chalet eaves. The Société Industrielle de Mulhouse, founded in 1826, encouraged mill owners to build here and the results are gloriously eccentric.
Pick up the free 'Rebberg architectural trail' leaflet from the Mulhouse tourist office on Avenue Foch before you set out — it maps 22 named villas with short histories of their original owners, many of whom shaped the global textile trade from these very streets.
Parks and Panoramas
The Parc Salvator at the hill's crest offers a broad terrace with views across the Rhine plain towards the Black Forest — on clear days you can see the Kaiserstuhl vineyards in Germany. It's a favourite spot for local joggers at dawn and families with picnics on Sunday afternoons.
The nearby Jardin Zoologique et Botanique de Mulhouse borders the Rebberg on its western flank, offering a pleasant loop back down to the city centre through avenues of century-old plane trees.
