Cité de l'Automobile – Musée National de l'Automobile
Home to the legendary Schlumpf Collection, this vast former textile factory shelters 98 Bugattis — including the only two Bugatti Royales in running order — alongside 450 other automotive masterpieces. It is simply the finest car museum on the planet, and it happens to be in Mulhouse.
The Schlumpf Legend
Brothers Fritz and Hans Schlumpf secretly amassed this jaw-dropping collection through the 1960s and 70s, hiding cars inside their textile mill until workers discovered the hoard in 1977. The story of obsession, bankruptcy and eventual nationalisation is as gripping as the vehicles themselves.
The centrepiece is the double row of Bugattis displayed under Belle Époque street lamps, recreating a Parisian boulevard inside the hangar. Stand beside a 1931 Bugatti Type 41 Royale and you understand immediately why automotive historians call this place a cathedral.
Planning Your Visit
Budget at least three hours — the collection spans racing cars, concept vehicles and presidential limousines across 17,000 square metres. Interactive simulators and a dedicated children's circuit make it equally compelling for families.
The museum sits on Rue de Colmar in the Musée-Quartier district, a short tram ride from central Mulhouse on line T1 towards Musées. Combined tickets with the nearby Cité du Train and Musée EDF Electropolis are available and represent excellent value.
