Playa de Sotavento de Jandía
Stretching nearly 30 kilometres along the Jandía Peninsula, Sotavento is one of Europe's most spectacular beaches — a shifting tidal lagoon turns the shoreline into a shallow turquoise mirror at low tide. Wind and kite surfers from across the globe make pilgrimages here, yet the sheer scale of the sand means you can always find a quiet patch of your own.
The Lagoon Effect
At low tide the Atlantic retreats to reveal a vast, knee-deep lagoon of glassy warm water — perfect for wading, paddling or simply standing in the middle of nowhere surrounded by liquid turquoise. The colours shift from pale mint to deep cobalt depending on cloud cover, making every hour look different.
This is the official venue for the annual PWA Windsurfing and Kiteboarding World Cup, usually held in July, so if you time your visit right you can watch elite athletes carving the same water you were paddling in that morning.
Getting There & Staying Comfortable
The beach is accessed via a well-signed turn-off on the FV-2 highway between Morro Jable and Costa Calma. A free car park sits behind the dunes, and a handful of chiringuito beach bars serve cold Tropical beer and grilled fish so you never need to leave.
Bring reef shoes — the lagoon bottom is sandy but the entry points near the car park have scattered pebbles. Sun shade is non-existent on this exposed strip, so arrive with your own umbrella or hire one from the beach bar concession.
