Playa de Cofete & Villa Winter
Playa de Cofete is the kind of beach that makes you feel like the first person to discover it — a raw, 12 km arc of dark-gold sand backed by the 800-metre peaks of the Jandía massif, perpetually pounded by Atlantic surf and almost entirely empty. The eerie, half-ruined Villa Winter looming on the hillside above only deepens the sense that you've stumbled into a forgotten corner of the world.
The Beach Itself
Cofete faces the open Atlantic and has no lifeguard, no beach bars and powerful shore break — swimming is for experienced ocean swimmers only and is genuinely dangerous in swell. But walking the length of this wild strand at sunrise or golden hour, with the Jandía peaks reflected in the wet sand and not another soul in sight, is one of the most memorable experiences the Canary Islands can offer.
Loggerhead sea turtles nest on this beach between June and October, and the protected status of the Jandía Natural Park means development is prohibited. What you see is what sailors saw centuries ago.
Villa Winter — History & Legend
The hulking stone Villa Winter was built in the 1940s by German engineer Gustav Winter, who obtained a controversial land concession from Franco's government. Legends of secret submarine pens, Nazi fugitives and Cold War espionage have swirled around it ever since — historians debate what actually happened here, but the atmosphere of the half-restored building is undeniably atmospheric.
Guided tours of the villa run on certain days (check locally at the Morro Jable tourist office for current schedules). Even without entering, the exterior and its commanding view over Cofete beach make it a compelling stop on any visit to the peninsula's wild side.
