Mercadillo de Morro Jable (Saturday Market)
Every Saturday morning the harbour esplanade of Morro Jable transforms into a lively open-air market where local producers, artisans and a handful of vintage traders set up under colourful awnings. It's the best single place on the Jandía Peninsula to buy authentic Majorero cheese, hand-thrown pottery and Canarian mojo paste to take home.
What You'll Find
The food stalls are the highlight: wheels of DOP-certified Majorero goat's cheese in three styles — fresh (tierno), semi-cured (semicurado) and fully cured (curado, often rolled in paprika or gofio) — sit alongside jars of mojo rojo, mojo verde and the fiery mojo picón made with local dried peppers. A spice vendor sells hand-blended Canarian herb mixes perfect for grilling fish at home.
Craft stalls offer hand-woven palm-leaf baskets (a traditional Fuerteventura craft), ceramic tiles painted with island motifs, and simple silver jewellery incorporating local volcanic stone. Prices are fair and bargaining is not really the local custom — a smile and a gracias go much further.
Timing & Tips
The market runs from around 09:00 to 14:00 and is at its liveliest between 10:00 and 12:00 before the heat builds. Arrive early for the best cheese selection — the popular semicurado rounds sell out quickly. Bring a cool bag if you're buying cheese or fresh produce.
Several food trucks and a coffee stand set up on the perimeter, making it easy to turn the market into a leisurely late breakfast. The harbour promenade location means you can combine the visit with a walk along the seafront and a swim at Playa de la Cebada, just five minutes away.
