Restaurant Vinatea

Named after the 14th-century Morella-born painter Joan Reixach (known locally as Vinatea), this long-established restaurant on Carrer de Blasco de Alagón is the most reliable address in town for traditional Maestrat cooking — in particular the arròs amb tòfona, a creamy rice dish built around locally sourced black truffle that is worth planning a winter visit around.

The Signature Dishes

The arròs amb tòfona arrives in a shallow terracotta cazuela, the grains just past al dente and perfumed with truffle shaved generously at the table. It is listed as a seasonal special from November to March and must be ordered 24 hours in advance — call ahead or book via their website.

The cordero al pastor (slow-roasted Maestrat lamb) is available year-round and is equally serious: the lamb is sourced from farms within 20 kilometres, roasted in a wood-fired oven and served with roasted garlic and local olive oil. The portion is generous enough to share between two if you have already ordered a rice course.

The Room and the Wine List

The dining room occupies a converted medieval townhouse with stone walls, low vaulted ceilings and plain wooden furniture — no design pretension, just comfort. Tables are well-spaced and the noise level stays low enough for conversation even when full.

The wine list leans into the DO Terra Alta and DO Valencia appellations, with a good selection of garnacha blanca whites that pair beautifully with the truffle rice. Staff are happy to recommend by dish rather than budget, which is a good sign.
