Parc Natural dels Ports (Ports de Beseit)
Just 20 kilometres north of Morella, the Parc Natural dels Ports is a rugged limestone massif of gorges, old-growth forest and high meadows that shelters one of the densest populations of Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) in Spain. It is the kind of landscape that makes you feel genuinely far from the modern world.
The Best Day Walks
The trail from the Fredes village to the Font de la Teixera (approximately 8 km round trip, 350 m elevation gain) passes through ancient yew and box forest before opening onto a limestone plateau where ibex sightings are almost guaranteed in the early morning. The trail is well-marked with yellow-and-white GR blazes.
A shorter option is the loop around the Barranc de la Fou gorge near La Pobla de Benifassà — a 4 km circuit with dramatic cliff scenery and a seasonal waterfall that runs strongest in April and May. Both trails start from free car parks with basic facilities.
Wildlife and When to Go
Besides ibex, the park hosts golden eagles, peregrine falcons and the increasingly rare lammergeier (bearded vulture), which was reintroduced here in 2006. Bring binoculars and scan the thermals above the southern escarpments between 10 am and noon.
Spring (April–June) brings wildflowers and birdsong; autumn (October–November) offers golden beech colour and cooler hiking temperatures. Summer is hot and trails are quieter on weekday mornings. Snow closes the upper tracks from December to February but creates spectacular scenery visible from Morella itself.
