Mercat de Morella (Weekly Saturday Market)

Every Saturday morning the arcaded Plaça Major fills with stalls selling local black truffle, cured meats from the Maestrat, artisan cheeses and hand-thrown ceramics — a genuine working market rather than a tourist performance. Arrive before 10 am to catch the full spread before the best truffles and sausages sell out.

What to Buy

The Maestrat highlands are one of Spain's lesser-known truffle territories, and between November and March several stalls sell fresh Tuber melanosporum (black Périgord truffle) at prices noticeably lower than in Valencia city. Vendors are used to letting you smell before you buy — just ask.

Locally made embotits (cured sausages) include a smoky longaniza de Morella that is unique to the area and almost impossible to find outside the comarca. Vacuum-packed, it travels well. The honey stalls, sourced from hives in the Ports de Beseit, stock rosemary and thyme varieties with an intensity that supermarket honey cannot match.

The Setting and the Atmosphere

The Plaça Major is framed by 14th-century stone arcades on three sides — the market stalls slot neatly under the arches, keeping produce shaded even in summer. The whole square smells of dried herbs, smoked paprika and coffee from the bar at the corner, which opens early specifically for market day.

By 11 am locals gather at the bar tables to debrief over a café amb llet and a slice of coca de Morella, a flat sweet pastry with pine nuts and aniseed that appears only on market days and during the Sexenni festival.
