Puerta de San Miguel & Portal de l'Estudis Viewpoint
The narrow stone terrace just inside the Puerta de San Miguel — the main medieval gate on the northern approach road — frames the entire walled town in a single glance, with the castle soaring above and the Valencian countryside rolling away below. It costs nothing and most visitors walk straight through without stopping.
The Gate and Its Terrace
The Puerta de San Miguel dates from the 13th century and retains its original portcullis groove and iron-studded timber doors. Step through and immediately turn left onto the small stone terrace: from here the full length of the town wall curves away to the east, punctuated by square towers at regular intervals.
Early morning is magical — the gate faces northeast, so the first light catches the castle rock and leaves the town in cool shadow, creating a natural contrast that photographers love. By 9 am on a summer day you will likely have the terrace to yourself.
The Approach Road View
Walking up the CV-15 approach road from the car parks below, pause at the hairpin bend roughly 500 metres before the gate. From here the entire silhouette of Morella — walls, church tower and castle — is stacked against the sky in a composition that looks almost too cinematic to be real.
This is the classic postcard shot of Morella and it works in every season: snow in January, wildflower meadows in April, golden light in October. A standard 24mm lens captures the full width comfortably.
