Trattoria del Pompiere
Tucked on a narrow street in Monza's old town, Trattoria del Pompiere has been feeding locals since the 1950s and remains the most honest address in the city for traditional Brianza cooking. The handwritten daily menu changes with the market, but the risotto alla Monzese — made with local luganega sausage and saffron — is always there and always perfect.
What to Order
Start with nervetti in insalata, a Lombard classic of boiled veal cartilage dressed with onion, capers and vinegar that sounds alarming and tastes wonderful, then move to the risotto alla Monzese, its grains bound in a golden, porky, saffron-scented sauce that is the defining dish of the province.
For secondo, the braised rabbit with polenta or the ossobuco with gremolata are both benchmark versions — portions are generous and the bread basket is refilled without asking.
The Room & The Ritual
The dining room is all checked tablecloths, framed football scarves and the low hum of Italian conversation — no background music, no mood lighting, just food taken seriously by people who grew up eating it.
Lunch here is a proper Lombard ritual: two courses, a carafe of local red, an espresso. Budget 90 minutes and do not rush it.
