Mercato di Monza — Piazza Trento e Trieste
Every Tuesday and Friday morning Monza's main piazza and the surrounding streets transform into one of the liveliest street markets in the province, drawing both serious shoppers and the kind of food-obsessed locals who will argue for ten minutes about which stall has the better grana padano. It is the fastest way to understand what Brianza actually eats.
What to Look For
The food section is the heart of it: stalls piled with luganega sausages coiled like rope, fresh pasta sheets, aged grana padano, wild mushrooms from the Brianza hills and seasonal fruit that actually smells of something.
Look out for the few remaining vendors selling cotechino and local salami made to old Lombard recipes — they are increasingly rare and their produce is far superior to anything in a supermarket.
Beyond the Food
The non-food section sprawls through adjacent streets with clothing, household goods, plants and the occasional antique or vintage find hidden among the bric-a-brac tables — worth a slow browse if you have time.
The market wraps up by 13:00, so arrive by 9:30 for the best produce selection and the most animated atmosphere; the surrounding bars do a roaring trade in espresso and cornetti to fuel the shopping.
