Parco di Monza
Enclosed by 16 km of walls and covering 685 hectares, the Parco di Monza is the largest walled park in Europe — a rolling landscape of meadows, woodland, farms and lakes that feels genuinely rural despite being minutes from the city. On a weekend morning it belongs equally to joggers, horse-riders, picnicking families and serious cyclists.
Cycling & Walking the Park
A network of well-marked gravel and asphalt paths crisscrosses the park; the full perimeter loop is about 14 km and takes a leisurely two hours by bike. Rental bikes are available at multiple points near the main entrances.
The stretch along the Lambro river, shaded by plane trees and willows, is particularly lovely in autumn when the colours turn gold and rust — one of the most atmospheric walks in all of Lombardy.
Wildlife, Farms & Lakes
The park shelters deer, foxes and over 100 bird species; the Cascina Frutteto and other working farms inside the walls produce honey, cheese and vegetables sold at small on-site stalls.
The Lago del Serbatoio and smaller ornamental ponds attract herons and kingfishers, and on warm evenings locals gather on the grassy banks with a bottle of local wine in a ritual that feels utterly Lombard.
