Montserrat Monastery (Santa Maria de Montserrat)

Perched on jagged limestone pinnacles 1,236 metres above the Llobregat valley, this Benedictine monastery has drawn pilgrims and travellers for over a thousand years. The resident monks still chant Vespers each evening, filling the basilica with sound that echoes off golden stone walls.

The Black Madonna & Basilica

La Moreneta — the revered 12th-century Romanesque statue of the Virgin — sits in a candlelit camaril above the high altar. Pilgrims queue to touch her orb, and the moment the Escolania boys' choir launches into the Salve Regina at 13:00 on weekdays, every hair on your arms stands up.

The basilica facade is neo-Renaissance but step inside and the gilded nave glitters with ex-votos left by grateful devotees across centuries. Arrive before 10:00 to walk the aisle without the midday crowds.

The Museum & Sant Joan Funicular

The Museu de Montserrat holds a surprisingly world-class collection: Picasso, Dalí, Monet and Egyptian mummies sit alongside medieval altarpieces — all in one mountain-top building.

After the museum, ride the Sant Joan funicular to 1,236 m and follow the 20-minute trail to the Sant Joan hermitage for sweeping views over the whole massif. The path is well-marked and suitable for most fitness levels.

Practical Timing

The Escolania choir performs Monday–Friday at 13:00 and Sunday at 12:00 and 18:45; confirm the schedule on the monastery website before visiting as the boys have school holidays.

The rack railway (cremallera) from Monistrol de Montserrat runs every 20 minutes and is the most scenic approach — book return tickets online in peak summer to guarantee a seat.
