Bar-Restaurant de l'Abat at the Abat Cisneros Hotel
Sitting down for a proper Catalan meal inside the monastery complex itself — in a dining room that has been feeding pilgrims and travellers for generations — is an experience that goes well beyond the food. The kitchen leans hard into regional produce: wild mushrooms from the massif, botifarra sausage and a wine list that champions Penedès and Pla de Bages.
What to Order
Start with the escalivada (smoky roasted aubergine and peppers with anchovies) and follow it with the botifarra amb mongetes — the definitive Catalan sausage-and-white-bean dish, simple and deeply satisfying at altitude. In autumn, ask for the seasonal ceps (porcini) gathered from the mountain forests; they appear in rice dishes and on toast with olive oil.
The house pa amb tomàquet — bread rubbed with ripe tomato and drizzled with local olive oil — arrives automatically at the table and is the best possible way to start understanding Catalan food culture.
Practical Dining Tips
The restaurant fills up fast between 13:30 and 15:00, especially on weekends. Book a table via the hotel website or arrive by 13:00 to walk in. The set lunch menu (menú del dia) offers three courses with wine for around €22 — exceptional value given the setting.
The hotel also runs a self-service cafeteria next door for those who want a quick bocadillo or coffee between sights. But if you have the time, the sit-down restaurant is worth every minute.
