Le Moulin de la Beune – Walnut Oil Mill & Shop
Just 10 kilometres south of Montignac in Les Eyzies, the Moulin de la Beune is one of the last working stone-wheel walnut oil mills in the Dordogne, where you can watch the entire cold-pressing process and buy oil so fresh it tastes like toasted nuts dissolved in silk. It is a sensory experience as much as a food stop.
The Mill Experience
The mill operates on the same hydraulic stone-wheel principle used for centuries: dried walnuts are crushed under a massive granite wheel, then gently heated and pressed to extract the oil. The smell alone — warm, nutty, almost caramel-sweet — is worth the detour.
Visits are informal; the miller or a family member usually walks you through the process and explains how the quality of Périgord walnuts (AOC-protected Noix du Périgord) differs from imported varieties. It takes roughly 4 kg of walnuts to produce 1 litre of oil.
What to Buy
The boutique sells cold-pressed walnut oil in 25 cl and 50 cl bottles — the unfiltered version is cloudier but more intensely flavoured. They also stock walnut vinegar, walnut paste for cooking, and small bags of the pressed walnut cake (tourteau) used in local baking.
Prices are very reasonable compared to supermarket equivalents, and the oil keeps for up to a year sealed. It makes one of the finest edible souvenirs of any Dordogne trip — pack it in your checked luggage with the cap taped.
Pairing It Back in Montignac
Back in Montignac, use your oil to dress a salade périgourdine: lamb's lettuce, sliced gésiers (duck gizzards confit), walnuts, lardons and Cabécou cheese. Several restaurants on the main square serve exactly this — ask if they use local walnut oil.
The Boulangerie on Rue du 4-Septembre sells walnut bread (pain aux noix) baked fresh each morning; a slice drizzled with mill-fresh oil and a scrape of local honey is one of those simple, unforgettable Périgord moments.
