Église Saint-Pierre de Montignac
While day-trippers queue for Lascaux, almost nobody stops to push open the heavy oak door of Saint-Pierre, Montignac's 12th-century Romanesque church tucked at the foot of the château hill — yet its carved capitals, cool stone interior and quietly beautiful apse make it one of the most rewarding five minutes in the entire village. Free, unhurried and utterly peaceful.
The Architecture
The church dates primarily from the 12th century, with a characteristically Périgordian single nave, barrel-vaulted ceiling and a semicircular apse that catches the afternoon light through narrow Romanesque windows. The exterior apse wall, visible from the lane behind, shows beautiful blind arcading in golden limestone.
Look up at the carved capitals on the nave pilasters: stylised foliage, a primitive face and interlocking geometric patterns typical of the Saintonge-Périgord Romanesque school. They are rough but genuinely expressive, carved by craftsmen working in the same century that saw Lascaux's rediscovery still centuries away.
Inside the Church
The interior is spare and calming: whitewashed walls, a few painted ex-votos, a 17th-century wooden altarpiece in the apse and candles flickering in a side chapel dedicated to the Virgin. It takes about 15 minutes to explore properly, and the silence after a busy summer street is profound.
A small information panel near the entrance (in French) traces the church's history through the Hundred Years' War, when Montignac changed hands repeatedly between English and French forces. The church served as a refuge and, at times, a stronghold.
When to Visit
The church is generally open during daylight hours in summer; in winter it may be locked — ask at the Office de Tourisme on Place Bertran-de-Born, a two-minute walk away, for the key or opening times.
The best light inside falls in the late afternoon when low sun enters the apse windows and turns the stone a warm honey colour. Combine the visit with the château ruins directly above for a complete hilltop history loop.
