Canoeing the Vézère from Montignac to Saint-Léon
The Vézère river slides past Montignac in long, glassy curves flanked by white limestone cliffs and overhanging oak forest — and the 12-kilometre paddle downstream to Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère is one of the most scenic and accessible half-day canoe routes in the entire Dordogne, passing troglodyte shelters, herons and the occasional kingfisher flash of electric blue. No experience needed.
The Route
The trip from Montignac's canoe launch (just off the D65, downstream of the main bridge) to Saint-Léon takes two to three hours at a relaxed pace on flat, calm water. The current does most of the work; paddling is needed mainly for steering around gravel bars.
About halfway, the cliffs rise dramatically at the hamlet of La Chapelle-Aubareil side and you pass beneath overhanging rock shelters used as dwellings from prehistory through the medieval period. Look for carved crosses and smoke-blackened ceilings. You can beach the canoe on gravel banks and explore on foot.
Wildlife and Scenery
Grey herons stand motionless on every second gravel bar; common kingfishers patrol the undercut banks with startling regularity. In summer, dragonflies hover over the shallows and sand martins nest in holes drilled into the sandy cliffs above the waterline.
The water is clear enough to see chub and barbel holding in the current over clean gravel. Swimming is possible at several wide, shallow sections — the water temperature reaches a comfortable 20–22°C in July and August.
Practicalities
Several canoe-hire outfits operate from Montignac in season (May–September), including Canoë Loisirs Montignac, which provides shuttle return from Saint-Léon. Prices run around €15–20 per person for a single canoe; book ahead in peak summer weeks.
Bring sunscreen, a dry bag for your phone and camera, and water. There are no shops between launch and Saint-Léon, but the Auberge de la Vézère in Saint-Léon serves cold drinks and lunch on a terrace right beside the river — a perfect finish.
