Sentiero Azzurro to Punta Mesco Headland
The trail north-west of Monterosso toward Punta Mesco rewards hikers with arguably the most dramatic coastal panorama in Cinque Terre — a sweeping arc of sea, terraced vineyards and all five villages strung along the cliffs. Come at golden hour and the light turns the water into hammered bronze.
The Climb to Punta Mesco
From the Fegina end of town, a signed path climbs steeply through fragrant macchia scrubland to the ruins of the 14th-century Convento di Sant'Antonio and the old lighthouse on Punta Mesco. The round trip takes about two hours at a moderate pace.
The ruined convent walls frame a perfect natural viewfinder looking back over Monterosso and east toward Vernazza. Bring water — there are no bars or fountains on this trail — and sturdy shoes, as the path is rocky and eroded in places.
Sunset & Photography Tips
Because Punta Mesco faces south-west, the promontory catches the last warm light of the day long after the village streets fall into shadow. Photographers should aim to reach the lighthouse ruins about 45 minutes before sunset.
In spring, wild rosemary, cistus and sea squill bloom along the path, adding foreground colour to wide-angle shots. On clear days you can see as far as the island of Gorgona and, on exceptional days, Corsica on the horizon.
The trail is part of the Alta Via delle Cinque Terre network and is marked with red-and-white blazes. Check trail conditions with the Cinque Terre National Park office before setting out, especially after autumn rains.
