Monterosso Weekly Thursday Market
Every Thursday morning a small but lively street market sets up along the Fegina waterfront promenade, drawing locals from the surrounding hillside villages as well as a few savvy visitors who know that this is the best place in town to buy Ligurian olive oil, dried porcini, fresh basil and hand-painted ceramics at non-tourist prices.
What the Vendors Sell
The food stalls are the main draw: look for jars of pesto made with Ligurian DOP basil, trofie pasta dried and packaged by local producers, bottles of Riviera Ligure DOP extra-virgin olive oil, and bunches of the small, intensely fragrant basil that grows in the coastal microclimate and tastes markedly different from supermarket varieties.
Herb and plant vendors sell potted basil, rosemary and lemon verbena alongside dried wild herbs foraged from the Ligurian hills — useful if you are staying in a self-catering apartment and want to cook properly.
A handful of artisan stalls offer hand-painted Ligurian ceramics in the classic blue-and-white maritime patterns, lace work from the nearby town of Rapallo and leather sandals made to order.
Timing and Etiquette
The market runs from roughly 8 am to 1 pm and is busiest between 9 and 11 am. Arrive early for the best selection of fresh produce and to avoid the heat.
Bargaining is not standard practice at Italian weekly markets — prices are usually fair and fixed. A friendly buongiorno and some basic Italian goes a long way; vendors appreciate the effort and will often throw in an extra bunch of herbs or let you taste before you buy.
Bring a reusable bag and cash; not all stalls accept card payments.
