Mercado Municipal de Mondragón (Arrasate Azoka)
Every Friday morning the covered municipal market of Mondragón fills with the scent of Idiazabal cheese, freshly pulled cider and whatever the Basque season has put on the table — a compact, authentic slice of everyday Basque life that most tourists walk straight past.
What to Buy and Who to Meet
Local baserritarrak (farmhouse producers) set up stalls selling handmade Idiazabal — the smoky, pressed sheep's-milk cheese that is the Basque Country's most iconic dairy product — alongside seasonal vegetables, cured meats and jars of homemade preserves. Prices are lower here than in the tourist-facing markets of San Sebastián, and the producers are genuinely happy to let you taste before you buy.
Look out for txakoli grapes in early autumn and wild mushrooms — perretxikos (St George's mushrooms) in spring and boletus in late summer — which locals treat with near-religious seriousness.
Eating Around the Market
The bars immediately surrounding the market open early to serve market-goers a quick pintxo and a small glass of txakoli or café con leche. Pull up a stool at Bar Kañoi on the old town fringe and order whatever is on the counter — the tortilla de bacalao is a reliable standout.
The market wraps up by early afternoon, so plan your visit for between 9 am and 1 pm to catch the full selection and the sociable morning buzz.
