Mercatino di Natale di Moena
Moena's Christmas market runs through December in the pedestrianised village centre, and because it is smaller and less touristed than the famous markets of Bolzano or Trento, it has kept the unhurried, genuinely local atmosphere that the big ones have largely lost. Wooden stalls glow amber against a backdrop of snow-dusted Dolomite peaks.
What Makes It Different
The market centres on Piazza Cesare Battisti and spills along Via Roma, with around 30 stalls run mainly by local artisans and food producers rather than commercial vendors. You will find hand-carved wooden nativity figures, locally knitted wool goods, and beeswax candles scented with mountain herbs — gifts that are actually made in the valley.
The food stalls are the real draw: hot vin brulé (mulled wine) made with Trentino Marzemino, roasted chestnuts, and slices of zelten — the dense, fruit-and-nut bread that is the traditional Trentino Christmas cake — are pressed into your hands at every turn.
Ladin Cultural Events
The market is woven into the Ladin Advent calendar of events, which includes choral evenings in the village church, torchlit processions down from the surrounding hillsides, and the Krampus parade on the evening of 5 December — a spectacularly theatrical tradition in which costumed devil-figures chase children through the streets.
Local craft demonstrations — woodcarving, lace-making, schüttelbrot baking — run on weekend afternoons and give visitors a genuine window into mountain life rather than a staged performance.
